The phrase makes it sound like "we're not here to complete a long (seemingly endless) task", which I don't think is what he means. I think he means "we're not here to mess around", so was wondering if there was something else to it.
Why would you put socks on a centipede? You wouldn't. Would doing so take a long time? Yes it would.
