I did a 100km route around Epping / Essex y'day on my new road bike. From hackney (my mate lives there) and it takes so long to get to the nice roads...
London is a horrible city to cycle round. I feel sorry for all of you and wish you less busy roads xoxo
-
• #2254
maybe your mate took you on awful roads ;) London has a lot of infra
-
• #2255
To be honest it does. I'm just jealous you have Epping down the way...
-
• #2256
Our new home is in hatch forest, one of the biggest selling points for me was that I didnt have to cycle all the fucking shit traffic to get there

• #2257
What bar bag is that please?
-
• #2258
it's this!
https://www.tokyobike.co.uk/outer-shell-drawcord-handlebar-bag-97422306.html
it's a bit pricey but after using a few, it's by far the best working one i've used, you can open it on the move and it's a decent size, with voile straps and good foam spacers it's pretty secure too!
@spotter this is sick - am looking at possibly moving that way for similar reasons, with it being so quick to get into town on the overground seems quite attractive.

I'm now expecting to see you with whitened teeth and a spray tan
-
• #2260
For a little extra cash I am happy to Photoshop this for you.
-
• #2261
Let's not pretend that you haven't already
-
• #2262
Holy moly that is pricey isn't it. It is cool but it might be the incentive I need to make one myself ha.
-
• #2263
I going to accept your challenge and then let a day go by and pretend I haven't already got Spotter The Essex Dream in stock yes.

fell off my bike yesterday as my lovely arcteryx trousers got caught in my chain - slow speed and the only damage done was to my ego
Alas, riding the bike some time around london to pick up stuff was nice, i absalutely hate that 2 speed hub tho, it seems to click into gear every time you coast, so every time you start pedalling you get a different ratio unless you really focus on it.
sure it's fun, and can be useful, having a direct drive gear and an overdrive gear means you don't get caught out on a hill or a flat, but i think personally i would prefer a single ratio between the two of them than this and just make do.
don't really want to spend money on a new wheelset - so likely i will grin a bare it - or just get stronger legs.
i'd also like some taller bars - really get upright chiller for city riding, hate looking at the ground when i cycle, the comfort from that might make everything else more barable tbqh. - so maybe i'll start there - find a cheap set of bmx bars

don't really want to spend money on a new wheelsetSold it after two rides for this exact reason.

glad it's not just me being insane/pedantic
might see what a quote is from a local shop to swap the hub for a single speed version using the same rim,
hub + spokes + build + cog might not be too bad
-
• #2267
what hub is it?
I had a SRAM automatix that was adjustable by disassembling and re-tensioning a spring. -

also rip trousers.
-
• #2269
May as well go for a wider rim if you go down that route though. I'd offer to do it as I feel somewhat invested in the bike but I'm not local.

Single gear, taller bars, remove bag, barspins, sorted
-
• #2271
All this time, I thought that bike was fixed and brakeless

great minds,
i was sizing up something like a wide rim with a signle speed conversion - seen some pictures of these fitting 50mm tyres and it would make a great big city bruiser , but then we get into the £2-300 range (cannae build a wheel)
also seen an old radavist one where someone has had a discbrake mount added out back with cable guides, that looked fun
all of it is money tho, or more at least than just swapping a hub
torn, because geo wise this is truly very nice for me, it does feel a lot like a less beefy version of the the homer and the proportions are just right, and making a few, but costly )relative to the cost of the bike) changes would make it so spot on.
700x50 coaster brake bmx would be p sweet for flow trails and urban rambling - horrible to get up a hill, excellent to go down them
but also - 4 decked out, esotric project bikes is too much
@Mukashibanashi the bag is essential for carrying my water bottle!!! it actually needs a new stem to barspin, it clips the gusset rn
@BareNecessities i do not have the legs for that
-
• #2274
Might look goofy but you could flip the stem and put the spacer underneath it. Probably gives you a couple of cm more for free.

any money for this project is also competing with the idea of putting 2x on the pacer
maybe a 34/26 double upfront, with a friction set up, on the 9 speed 11-32 casette on the back. which would give quite a nice spread of gears, epping last week was fine for it but if it had weight on i'd quickly be off the bike.
but am not doing any rides which would require that any time soon...although if i had it? would i be likely to do one?!?!
now you have ridden it more than i have
