If I'm getting some cast aluminium wheels powder coated do I need to remove my wheel bearings?
-
• #21078
Yup. The static process will get powder in every nook and cranny. You could tape over them but I’d not risk it.
-
• #21079
Ha, the thought of not taping these up made me laugh and being surprised when they don't work.
-
• #21080
Sorry yea I knew you’d know to tape them up… but yea nah, why risk that?

If this is an excuse to buy a bearing puller set, think I can get on board with that.
-
• #21082
Yes and make sure the area is masked

Slide hammer probably better depending on how much of the outer race is 'visible' inside.

Clean and shiny just need one minor repair (out with the glue) and I'm set.
Go on, dip in your pockets... it's for a good cause, and the irony of me riding in the "Gentlemen's Ride" has to be worth a few bob!

Who you using? Been thinking of just totally rebuilding the SV.

So I went (on the CBR600) to Cheddar to buy chocolates for family members. Mum’s 60th party today.
Went over the speed bump to Helmet City. Bike died.
Zero lights with key on.
One of the 10A’s had blown, and the main 30A too. Replaced 10A no avail, then when replacing 30A with bike switched off the familiar crack of a short circuit to battery. Fuse pop.
So I used the breakdown cover I pay for with Bikesure and the guy drove me all the way back from Cheddar to Swindon.
No point trying to fix at the roadside. Needs all the wires checking for continuity.
Not quite the journey I was aiming for today.

A local family run business, quoted £40-50 which includes blasting off the old paint too. A newer company in the same town was charging £75 per wheel so an easy decision.
@pdlouche bobbins. Hope you find the short soon and doesn't take too much digging.

Bah, old wiring harnesses be a pita!
My old bike was a trooper until I leant it to a mate for a week, what he did to it I never worked it out, crazy use of a pressure washer or maybe he was just unlucky. Came back and would run the starter every time you turned the bars a certain amount. But the damaged wire wasn't between bar switch and frame, but much further down on the inside of frame where it then runs over to solenoid/relay box. When you turned the bars it moved the clutch cable which stroked the excite wire at at a reallly weird point. Replaced the wire end to end and wrapped it all been up. Water logged inside the wiring loom. -

Yes exactly what I’ll face.
Guessing all the rain travelled somewhere magical. And now I get to disassemble everything.

Was cycling on a loop out of Bristol and saw 150+ bikes. Stopped to chat with a Marshall who explained it was the 'distinguished gentleman's ride' for prostate cancer awareness.

FINALLY did new oil in the DR. Many months overdue since I’ve been riding it less and less.
Went out for 3 hours on some very dusty tracks. New boots are breaking in well.
Used fully synthetic oil as I had no semi left at home. Bike didn’t seem to mind one bit.

Yes, I did the London one. Over 500 riders. Great fun

Unplugged reg/rec. Bike turned on and started. Plugged it in, fuse blew. R/R numbers didn’t align with Haynes manual.
Definitely looks like R/R shat the bed.
Mechanic told me to double check stator like so.
Time to shop for a Mosfet..

I believe they are known weak points for these bikes - an alternative is recommended in forums/etc but I was lucky enough not to have issues.
-
• #21095
Yea I was kinda waiting for it to fail, just caught unawares without a spare in the bag. Will fit a Mosfet/bypass and avoid it happening twice.

Old man moment. Vaguely looking for a cheap VFR750 to putt around on and the occasional commute. A little gear driven cam V4 action never hurt anyone, either.

They also sound incredible!
-
• #21098
They do. Not as good as the flat plane cranks in the 400 and RC30 but still great.
I don't really need one, but I'd sort of like a practical bike I can take a passenger on.

£170 ish quid to add a Honda c90 onto the last six months of my current insurance, it would have been cheaper to get something fast and uncomfortable!!

Great idea - early one's are mighty.
Ohhh. Forgot about that
