My missus has the XCover 5 and I don't like it. Not sure she does either. It's not as big as all the other stuff but they've made the case slicker (god knows how many times she's dropped hers) and they've done dumb things to the button positions. They also got rid of the front hardware buttons which were great when using on the bike for GPS replacement or mid-race tweeting if that's your thing.
I used the Sony Z3 Compact and that was a great little phone, until the back came off it while mounted to my bars with a quadlock. All their newer phones have been a bit shit and I hate their Sony OS crap - I'd much prefer raw Android. It's not a deal breaker though, obvs, as I'm still using my Samsung XCover 4S with their stupid OS.
Looking to downsize my personal phone now that all the stuff which warranted being big has been migrated to a Galaxy Tab Active 3 for work and a 10" tablet for web browsing. Just did the gsmarena whittling down search for myself, looks like it's an Xcover 5 or nothing. Sony just announced Xperia 10 IV which is thinner, narrower and lighter and only 6mm taller, but it lacks the drop-proofness and it's double the price of the Samsung. I like my old Xperia, but probably not enough to pay that much when the Samsung UI is pretty inoffensive.
And, per your tweet and @skinny upthread, good luck trying to find anything properly small
