  • Google nv200 camper conversion and a couple of pics turn up with a side/rear canopy.
Edit; a batwing awning might be what you’re looking for?

  • Fun… lined up next to friends van, will lift the van an inch

  • Tyres on, fitted an LED light bar to the roof rack - needs to be adjusted 90deg forward, van is about 1” higher!

  • Take my money!

Saw a SWB Renault Master with high roof today. Around 2010 age I think, pretty ideal for what I'm after, as wide enough to have bed/berth across the back, and high up so has bike garage underneath. Enough height to stand everywhere, could even raise the floor a bit for longer storage underneath (surf board/ski etc). Drove pretty good and way less rust than equiv age VW or Merc van which was surprisingly.
Absolutely stank of smoke though, every single surface in the cab was turning into a nasty sticky substance from the decade of smoking thats been done in it. So a hard pass from me on that exact van, but the concept is ideal.
In my area parking is getting quite hard, council is trying to bring a resident scheme in which won't help a bit (as all the cars belong to residents unsurprisingly!) but what will be an issue is MWB or LWB vans will not fit in most of the bays, only a handful of larger bays will be made, and can guarantee that some nissan micra will park in those permanently.

Pic is of a L1H2, but I'm sure what I just saw was an L1H3. Renault don't seem to offer it anymore, but maybe just in 2009/10 they made a few or it was a custom order? Or maybe I can buy some new death wheels and make another one thats no so nasty.

  • Another aspect of resident parking in my area is allowed height. It could well be different for you but I'm pretty sure I would not be allowed to park a van that tall in the street I live in on a resident's permit.

  • Good point, never seen a restriction in Scotland for that, but seen some in English towns where they are targeting camper vans*, those monster camper home things and medium commercials from parking in 'residential' areas.

UK starting to feel more like the US as time goes past, more car centric suburbs, more (originally) tram suburbs around the city itself becoming super car infested and more rules and regulations regarding types of vehicles in certain places.

*to be fair, loads more campervans in our street now, I counted 12 the other day all at once, vs before covid there was 1 or 2. However all of these folk that is INSTEAD of their family car, so number of vehicles is the same and most of them are the regular transit van or lwb transit size so not massively different to a modern SUV (which also infest the local streets).

  • This is the restriction for my london borough

The maximum size for passenger or goods vehicles is 2.27 metres (7'6") high; 5.25 metres (17'3") long.

  • You'll probably be alright for a good few years unless you're right in the centre of town. In London things are getting pretty tightly regulated.

  • Same as mine. The H3 is about 2.8m.

  • Tried a test sleep in the camper last night, parked outside my flat.

I was comfortable, but found it very hard to sleep - not ideal.

The camper was on a slight angle, in peoples experience could this be the reason, or should I be looking elsewhere?

  • You probably just need to get used to it, different bed/surrounds etc.

  • I'm not sure I would sleep very well outside our flat. Our van feels very different when we're away compared to on our street - purely psychological but I think the best testing is 'real world' imo

  • Covers for Windows?
    Ear plugs?
And as said, it'll be better when not outside flat.
I've never bothered with wheel chocks

  • I've got insulation panels for the windscreen, front side-windows and the rear windscreen, plus blackout curtains for all the windows in the rear.

I'll have another test somewhere "proper".

  • Personally I find leveling the van makes a big difference for sleeping. You just never know what kinda surface you are going to end up on. I invested in blocks early doors. They get used loads. Also ear plugs all the way for me! Screen covers / blinds not only get it dark but give you privacy! Essential for me.

  • I keep earplugs in my van all of the time and always take them when staying in hotels as well. I find people irritating :)

  • I am away in the van ATM. Irritating was the recycling bottle bank next to the van getting emptied at 6am today. No earplugs were getting me through that!

  • Festival campsite.

  • I wouldnt trust myself getting up those stairs after a day session...

  • Slept (well) in the van on Saturday night, rhr 47, slept in my own bed last night, rhr 43- so close, and hugely better being in a field with it pissing down with rain than outside the flat in the dry.

  • Was alright. Didn't fall out either.

  • It was so windy that a chaps roof box tent thing folded up, I presume without him in it, on Saturday. Do you guy yours down?

  • You weren't partying hard enough then!

  • Obviously not. Must try harder next time.
