Late finish learning about picamera2 (not yet fully released) as the Bullseye OS won't run my timelapse project as the original picamera Python isn't supported on it.
Going to be a while learning how to get things all to work on the pi4 as rather than install the old 32 bit Buster OS and make life easy I've chosen to try the 64bit lite option. For my use case I doubt I'd notice much difference between them.

Thanks all.
I've hastily ordered a Raspberry Pi Zero 2, which went from 26 in stock to 11 whilst checking the draw for a suitable power supply.3 left in stock after my order was confirmed!

They go so fast don't they!

Fun fact: The "Zero" is a subtle nod to the stock levels

Never found a use for Voilė straps before now...

So getting pihole running and upgraded to a recursive DNS server was the easy part.
I directed my phone to it yesterday as a test, but I've since broken my network 3 times trying to use the sodding thing, needing to reset the TPlink Deco M4 mesh.
Deep breath and more coffee required!

I gave up trying to get the Deco App to accept the Pi as the DNS. Opting to change the settings of individual devices instead.
My Mrs has an old Samsung Galaxy tab, for FB, YouTube and Internet. At one point last night, it was getting over 50% of its requests blocked whilst nothing appeared to be broken.

My ongoing timelapses, this one worked out well I thought:

How hard, in theory, would it be to set up a Rpi4 as a thin client for RDP/VNC only, i.e. connect it by ethernet to a network but only allow it to communicate on the necessary ports for those protocols?
(it could be connected to the internet initially for setup potentially)
-

Not very. Add some iptables rules to only allow RDP/VNC, and probably DNS, and don't give the user root access so they can't change the iptables rules.

There are a handful of distros for Pi that do exactly this. Or at least there were. From memory, WTWare and Stratodesk but no idea if they are still active. I'm sure there will be a decent open source option out there though.
Edit:
WTWare is still active https://winterminal.com/
Stratodesk is not free anymore.

Even if you don't find the perfect distro it should be fairly straight forwards to do yourself. I'd start off with a basic Rpi distro and try out the various RDP and VNC clients to see if any tick your boxes.

Thanks, WTWare sounds fairly ideal.

Possible hobby project/beer money here - 24v led lightbox needs to flash a pre-programmed morse code;

ask any q's here - or let me know if you have any other suggestions, thank you!

I'm in Manchester but happy to talk through this if you like. The code for the arduino will be nice and simple and if the lightbox is DC a solid state relay could be all you need to make it controllable

This looks okay but hard to find details on. Looks like it has max input current of 25mA but no word on input resistance so maybe something to consider. Also would want to be sure the output is non-latching

Yes I wouldn’t really want to do this without a proper data sheet.. @Chopsicle RS does have branches in London so you might be able to get something today if needed..

In other news pi 4 2gb arriving shortly. Will be getting the high quality camera module and lens(es) over time to try more interesting stuff.
