I'm in Manchester but happy to talk through this if you like. The code for the arduino will be nice and simple and if the lightbox is DC a solid state relay could be all you need to make it controllable

Amazing, thank you for the offer @Yoshy let me see how today goes, and how much time I might have over weekend/Monday, plus where I can get the parts these days. Maplins closed (RIP), RS components closed at weekends, will check for SE London places in a tick.
