• Lucky you! No way we could have trained our adopted and very reactive dog without them (and the help of a great trainer).

  • at the most basic level Benny gets treats because it makes him happy and seeing him happy makes us happy.

  • Good to know, thanks! I will be wfh with them almost all the time. Can come into the office once a fortnight or so too. We’ll be joined at the hip.

  • Now, that rationale does make sense and I am absolutely fine with it. I hope I didn't come across as a total killjoy, it's just that I see so many happy yet spherical dogs being slowly killed by kitchen kindness. I can't ask my dogs, but they seem perfectly happy without treats and have always stayed fit (in several cases to over 16). I have never missed a dog walk, even if I am ill or whammed, I simply believe this is more important than bribes. As to training, I have found that patience, repetition and praise trump everything.

  • I only use treats at agility now really.

The agility training has a pretty strict usage policy of do work > get paid a wage, rather than bribery as such. Eventually we will transition onto playing with a tug toy as the wage rather than treats too.

  • No dogs for 12 days!
Dora is now huge, and remains a very spoilt doggo.
She learnt to bark this week, which is always funny.

  • switched Benny from paleoridge to natures menu raw as a test and his runny poos cleared up immediately.

the NM offerings are much less tripey than the 8kg bundles from PR so I wonder if that was what was doing it but his toilet trips are so much better for us now and the poor git doesn't have to suffer through sometimes needing an urgent poo in the middle of the night.

plus my gf and mum both happier dealing with the frozen nugget system for each meal a couple of hours before serving rather than juggle blocks of half defrosted slurry in the fridge for days.

  • Bosco is on NM nuggs, good variety of flavours, we settled on duck or rabbit as his preferred variety.
Didn't like Lamb, and the beef led to some softer dumps.

We now decant his daily allowance into 4 Tupperware boxes a chuck them in the freezer, every evening we get tomorrow's out to defrost in the fridge.

  • Which Crumpet are you today?

  • Thats fantastic. Its so much more convenient.

Wonder what it was about PR that was giving him the shits?

  • The unbearable weight of a massive head

  • Was out walking my Whippet and the family Fox Terrier with my partner at lunch, both on leads, we bumped into 2 smallish terrier dogs and the owner asked if she should put one of them on their lead... I don't know, should you?

Anyway, it launches itself at the fox terrier and grabs it by the throat and starts tugging VERY hard, chaos ensues and ends up with me having to choke it out for it to let go. Surprisingly managed to keep a level head and helped the other owner calm the dog down. The owners friend puts the dog on a spare lead and walks it off up the hill... she then starts screaming that its slipped its collar, I turn around to see it homing in on my partner who is currently carrying both of our dogs away, thankfully I was able to launch myself at it and pin it down.

Lucky I was there (have a few cuts), lucky FT is ok with a small puncture wound and I count myself very lucky that it wasn't my Whippet as that would have ended so much worse.

We are making really good progress with our Whippet off the lead in fields etc but this experience just makes me want to keep him on his lead forever. It went from 0 to 100 way too quick.

  • Billy is the most gentle dog, he was very confused with what was happening.

  • Fucking hell, well done for staying calm and dealing with the situation! That sounds so stressful, I'm sure I would have just panicked.

  • I've been walking this guy for a couple of weeks. He is lovely with people but has a reputation with other dogs. No dramas so far, has been very interesting to be walking a big dog. I usually walk a 5 kg fur ball.

  • Sorry to hear this, hope you both heal quickly.

Your story reminded me of some of the stress I've been getting while walking a big dog who I know reacts to dogs approaching him.

Some owners are so irresponsible, it's really frustrating. Then I have the other side of it with my tiny dog who is vulnerable to just about anything.

  • I had the best morning this morning

  • It was only after going through his sick I found this. He’s been to the vets and they’ve got no idea what it is. Activated charcoal and some anti nausea medication. Again

  • No idea what it is

  • Minging! Looks like smashed up soap or something.

  • Not to worry you, but could it be rat poison?
