What species of car is it?
Things I have known in the past to cause similar symptoms:
Sticking solenoid on starter motor - solution, hit it with a hammer which works for a while but eventually kills it altogether.
Ignition barrel intermittent fault - no real work around for this other than amateur attempt at hot wire which is not recommended (by me).
My car was a bit weird starting on Saturday, (electronics all seemed fine but it just didn't turn on or make any kind of noise, jumping the battery didn't help, I just turned the key on and off a bunch of times and eventually the engine turned over and started)
Then on sunday it didn't start at all, left it overnight, tried it on monday, didn't start, called breakdown service they took it to the garage.
At the garage the breakdown guy was like "What if we roll it back off the truck and see if we can bump start it?" I didn't really want to argue with him so we did it, the car did indeed start rolling backwards.
For the past 3 days the car has been at the garage and they say that they turn it on every morning and it's fine. I've got a trip coming up on Thursday so I guess at this point I'm just going to have to hope it's fine. Kind of annoying though. Happy to pay to fix things when they go wrong but it's weird the amount of problems I have that when I take it to the garage they claim it's fine and I just have to kind of live with it.
