Disc wheel rim brake braking surface query...

  • The braking surface on my Pro-Lite Padova disc wheel is locally wearing away. Is this a problem? The brake pad is now, I guess, bearing straight down on the carbon layup.

    Is this a problem?

  • You might be able to get a little more use out of them depending on your personal risk tolerances, but honestly the wheel is done.

  • Pretty sure I’ve seen carbon repair places offer a refinishing service for the breaking surface on carbon rims/wheels.

I think that, when new, you are basically breaking on lacquer so it’s just a case of replacing that and you get a load more life.

Obviously it’ll depend how far gone it is now and stuff so I’d stop using it and get it seen to asap.

Edit: Had a Google, opinions seem mixed.

This place seems to have done it though… https://carbonbikerepair.co.uk/wp/?p=1370

  • Ooof... thanks for the replies gents. Not what I was hoping for, but kinda what I was expecting.

Fortunately it's got a interchangeable track/road axle, so looks like this is resigned to the velodrome from here on.

    Thanks.
