• It's not a disc rim I'm replacing it's a rim rim!

Flange failed on my Mack superlight rear, rim is old Archetype not worth rebuilding.

I want to go fixed with front disc in future so will do back wheel now (with Surly Ultra New because 130mm spacing) then front wheel and disc upgrade in due course.

What Kinlin am I googling please?

  • Check the chainline on the surly hub. I have a feeling it's non-standard but that could be just the 135mm spaced ones.

  • Ugh. I've already ordered it - well, a bike shop have ordered it from Surly for me. Bike shop is in Gloucestershire and do free no quibble returns so I could if necessary but I'd feel like a bit of an arse returning a special order as it's a small indy with a website.

Someone wrote this in a review on the SJS page for the 130mm hub:

Chainline on fixed is about 46mm with a Surly sprocket, so you can usually get away with your existing road cranks and BB

    That sounds OK right?
