I had seen the Boyds but I don't think they're available over here. I think that A-force al33s are also available in ceramic but can't find anywhere that stocks those here either, at least not the ceramic ones.
What makes you think tubeless is a waste of money out of curiosity? I run tubeless on my gravel bike and was running tubeless on my previous road bike. I'll be using a set of carbon tubs on the new bike when conditions allow but I want a more bombproof wheelset for the rest of the year -

a modern tubeless compatible coated rim would mostly negate that problem right?
Not negate, just delay. Most of the black rims you can buy are soft anodised, that will wear off if you look at it wrong. Full hard anodising (if you could still get it) will last much longer, but will still look beaten up after one winter on wet and dirty roads. Carbide coated will last longer still, but it's expensive and limited to, at best, a couple of rims.
If you're getting beater wheels to save your crabon, just buy some cheap factory wheels (Shimano/Mavic/Fulcrum according to prejudice) or do what every query in the wheelbuilding threads resolves to and build a set of Kinlin XR31s. If you must, get the disc ones and hoover up the Insta likes before you touch them with a brake pad.

Mate's rim cracked (LOL) and so he needs a replacement rear wheel:
-700C road disc rim
-12x142 hub- let's say 32h, it's London used
- 10/11spd road freehub
- factory built
- online available
- 6bolt although could just adapt CL if one is suitable
Any suggestions? Shimano and Mavic Aksium stuff all seems to be lower spoke counts, everything else starts to get a bit spendy. Budget = cheapish. The whole bike is <£1k so 200-250 maybe?

Something like this perhaps, but he only needs the rear.

There's a 50% off code at superstar on wheelsets atm.
https://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/shop/road/road-wheels/road-disc-wheels/
A variety of rims built on their own hubs, which are pretty solid and no fancy propriety spokes. I've had the ARC v6 for a couple of years (including using them offroad) and they've been fine. I think they're rebadged kinlin rims.
You could even get the Element V6 mtb wheels if you wanted something sturdier... https://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/element-v6-wheelset-uk-made-hubs.htm. The gf has the 650b version on her mtb and they've been solid for xc. (caveat: We're lightweights)

Top end of budget but if they want something reliable, you won't get better than the pro4 hubs with 32 DB spokes:

I saw some Hope wheels but they were either the wrong width or in this case, no black in stock and QR ends rather than 12x142. I know you can change them but then he has to piss about finding new end caps too. If they were in stock in black though...
Ta anyway I'll pass it on

Can anyone recommend me a tubeless compatible, not too pricey, wider alu disc rim that's available in black and 32h please?
I basically want a Pacenti SL25 - which have been great for me - but they don't make them any more. I really want a decent internal width (SL25 is 20mm) and tubeless for the ride quality this combo produces.

DT R460Db is outrageously good value.
Pacenti Forza could be worthwhile as you like the SL25 but not 2x as much IMO. -
• #8911
I’ve got a set of take of wheels he can have for buttons including discs…
Vision team 35s, with some continental 25 tyres and tubes and 160’rotors…no cassette as I wanna keep that £120…
-
• #8912
Could work. Possible to use them with 12x142 arse end?
He'll have the cassette off his old wheel anyway. Not sure what rotors he has but I have spare 140s if he needs to swap. -
• #8913
Are Kinlin out of stock? And: how does a disc rim require replacement?
-

For some reason when I looked them up I thought they were carbon...
I should be able to get £40 off a pair so they are probably the winners.

It's not a disc rim I'm replacing it's a rim rim!
Flange failed on my Mack superlight rear, rim is old Archetype not worth rebuilding.
I want to go fixed with front disc in future so will do back wheel now (with Surly Ultra New because 130mm spacing) then front wheel and disc upgrade in due course.
What Kinlin am I googling please?
-
• #8916
Check the chainline on the surly hub. I have a feeling it's non-standard but that could be just the 135mm spaced ones.
-
• #8917
What Kinlin am I googling please?
XR31RTS for disc. 26 or 22 if you're feeling perverse and want to save a few grams on a 32 spoke wheel.
-
• #8918
I had SL25 and cracked both rims. Replaced with Forzas, much better
-
• #8919
Ugh. I've already ordered it - well, a bike shop have ordered it from Surly for me. Bike shop is in Gloucestershire and do free no quibble returns so I could if necessary but I'd feel like a bit of an arse returning a special order as it's a small indy with a website.
Someone wrote this in a review on the SJS page for the 130mm hub:
Chainline on fixed is about 46mm with a Surly sprocket, so you can usually get away with your existing road cranks and BB
That sounds OK right?

Thanks.
26 or 22 if you're feeling perverse and want to save a few grams on a 32 spoke wheel.
Bike weighs approximately as much as the sun so no need for that.
This may be a factor in my lightweight Mack hub failing if I'm honest.

Would it be weird to have an asymmetric front rim?
Pacenti only seem to have the disc Forza in asymmetric.
If I go with the Kinlin XR31 RTS Spa Cycles have them for £55 but only asymmetric - I've found symmetric elsewhere but for £71.
Because of the Pacenti rim amnesty I can get a pair of asymmetric Forzas for £130, a pair of asymmetric XR31's for £110. So the Forzas are a bit lighter and have 1mm wider internal width for £20 a pair more - trying to work out if this is actually worth it or not, especially given continuing quality rumours about the Forzas. I'll be running 35c tyres if that makes any difference...
-
• #8922
Can't go wrong with Hope (hubs at least) - had two friends crack the rims on these though.
-
• #8923
My Genesis has Pacenti Forza (disc) rims, did think it a little odd with asymmetry on the front but there's no performance impact in my experience. I'd definitely want a wider rim like the Forza with 35mm tyres.
-
• #8924
See that Genesis is lovely but it makes me think that I'm overspeccing rims for my fixed/about town tank bike!
I'd go with the DT R460Db @JB suggested but apparently they aren't all that tubeless, plus 2mm narrower inside. The cost difference between the Kinlins and the Forzas is basically one Deliveroo and I get to take them up on the amnesty...
-
• #8925
Not that it matters cause you're sorted now, but my rim brake R460 took all of ten minutes to set up tubeless from scratch. Easiest tubeless set up I have ever encountered....
Forza's do look like better rims though tbf
My understanding is that's what the Oxic coating is on the DT Swiss, or at least the same sort of idea.
Obviously there isn't much point going to the trouble of sourcing all black wheels if the colour on the brake track is going to wear off after a short while but a modern tubeless compatible coated rim would mostly negate that problem right?
@Skülly Doesn't need to be all black, just not shiny silver. Definitely has to be aluminium and tubeless though, already have a set of carbon wheels, looking to build a set of winter wheels.
