  • I’m going to use this thread to post random shit about The Pest.
I bought this SJS road single speed bike, from a chap from “Men In Sheds”. He looked like he was on a register, hence the name. (I work in education so can’t use The Pest’s full name in public.)
Anyway it came with dura race hubs laced to mavic rims, and dura race track cranks (I lent them to someone and as yet they haven’t returned)
It’s been though many different guises in my stewardship have some pics to do the talking

  • This morning I had to drop The Billboard into work for Monday morning so I did this rather than use the car.
I’m sure they’ll be more rubbish that befalls The Pest so I’ll update this as and when.

  • That's aweome mate. Perfect do everything and made by a brilliant UK company. Very jealous actually. Keep The Pest photos coming! T

  • Diggin' the rack

  • Cheer, probably the best £100 I’ve ever spent on bike stuff.

  • It’s a cool little thing and thanks to @D_Mars I now know what it is :)

  • Fantastic looking frameset, I really like the slightly oversized tubes.

  • confusing first paragraph. word bundle

  • Oh it’s sturdy alright.

  • Better?
Dyslexia is a shit! I try, sometimes I fail.

  • yep!

    awesome bike btw

  • About 4 years ago, I purchased the road version of this frame. I haven't got round to building it up yet though. My question is this: What size tyres can you run with guards please?

  • 4 years!!! Come on ;)
At the moment I’ve got 30mm tyres on a 17mm rim under some Raleigh stainless guards the ones with the stays wrapped under the guard itself. So with modern guards I’d say it’s an easy 32mm.
If it helps, on the same rims, with brakes I’ve got 38mm Specialized Tiggers in with a bit of clearance round the calliper and without brakes I’ve run 42mm specialized sawtooths and 41mm Surly Knards just.

  • Yes, the wheels of bike building turn slowly chez greytyke (literally)
I like your build very much. How does the frame ride?

  • I see what you did there :)
TBH I bought it to just get the cranks and hubs, but it rides really nicely. The fork is a little springy and the back is a tad heavy, but together they clatter along just fine. I ditched the 1” stem by way of a shim and fitted an 1 1/8” one and put some road bars instead of the skinny track drops. Now it goes where you point it rather than thinking about it for an hour first. I like it.

  • Fitted some not on the end bar ends. They work well for an almost on the hoods type hand position. I also rebuilt one of my ‘you can have these Flybikes cnc levers for free as they don’t work’ I say rebuilt, I took it apart, greased the bushes and put it back together. It works brilliantly.
I think I need a shorter stem though,

  • Stem does look like it’s in an adjacent postcode, but if it works?
Love the ‘think about it for an hour before turning’ bit - cockpits I have known (built … bleargh)

  • Changed the 3T 140mm for a Trek(shhh) 100mm stem, better, but think I may try the 80mm off the MTB for size.

  • It’s more like a tiller than a stem.

  • Hold on; hotrod. Are you the same Chaley who helped me out that time in Egham when the wheel flew off my 100E?

  • Could there be another?
Last time we spoke was at the swap meet in Essex, I think and I’m pretty sure it was about bikes.

It was and it was, I remember that. It was a long time ago now! I've seen you posting but I think I just hadn't put two and two together.

  • Whilst riding last night there was a new rattle coming from the from end. By the time I got home it was obvious what it was. One of the front guard bolts had snapped. Oh well. As it was in the stand I thought I’d start on this as well. Possible 10 speed dura race, maybe maybe not

  • Well that was a stupid idea, I put the rear derailleur on and a shifter and went for a ride. No no and again no! Anyway it’s back to the old same old.
Next some flared bars and fatter tyres. On and I think I need to get a basket on there again.
