Hawking Radiation says otherwise, although that's not directly relevant to this, and then there's gravitation waves. But I believe what's being demonstrated there is energy generated by the compression that matter undergoes as it gets close to the black hole. Energy generated by the effects of the black hole, outside the black hole, in the accretion disk.
