It's the same in most communities both online and off. I've met some really strange people in the past; they're rarely malicious (although I've met some who definitely crossed that line) but often I think it starts with an urge to be accepted and a part of something and if you don't have to prove anything, for some people the lie is easy.

It makes me wonder why is cyclists as a group are susceptible to these people, lfgss has had two notable ones where we bought into people who fabricated so much of their story.
