It's the same in most communities both online and off. I've met some really strange people in the past; they're rarely malicious (although I've met some who definitely crossed that line) but often I think it starts with an urge to be accepted and a part of something and if you don't have to prove anything, for some people the lie is easy.

Happened on other large forums I've run too.
It's just people... it's not this place, it's just people... they're everywhere.
