I have seen yoof wearing pajama pants as a fashion statement, so maybe the slippers are the next step

A friend of mine once accidentally wore a hat as a sock. He didn't realise until he got to work. I don't know if that or intentionally wearing slippers out of the house is worse.

I saw a girl walk out her place to go to work wearing fluffy slippers. Thats just a plain wtf.
Was her outfit otherwise office normal? Could simply be doing the U.S. commuter thing where people wear comfortable shoes (e.g. trainers) on the commute and switch to formal shoes as they get to the office.
