  • Started on my two storey side extension to detached house after getting planning permission on appeal.

I’ve poured the strip foundation and laid the first layer of trench blocks and also first course of internal blocks. Will also be laying 3 courses of bricks to dpc level and also the mot/blinding/dpm/insulation and concrete myself

Would love to do the brickwork but probably get someone in to do it

Never laid a brick before hit really enjoyed it!

  • I just laid a 30cm x60cm patio, thanks for pissing on my chips.

  • Patios are notoriously difficult to do….

  • 30x60 centimetres, was it just one tile?

  • Nah, it was a few, it was just extending a previously paid one. Not far off doorstep sized!

  • I dug a hole about 8 months ago, and I am yet to fill it in.

  • I still need to make a balustrade

  • i could write a list of all of the jobs i have to finish and yet to start, but i'm fairly sure it would exceed the character limit.

  • I still have to finish the kitchen I fitted 12 years ago!

  • you're building a two storey extension yourself?!

  • Fucking hell. Make and fit a custom size door casing and then knock some plaster off to reveal….

A wall catching all the roof timbers that’s barely bonded to the rest of the house. Builder back on Tuesday to prop it and rebuild with a concrete lintel this time. Had so many of these surprises on this project - hopefully this is the last.

  • Can anyone in the Glasgow area recommend a builder and joiner? Looking to have a wall taken out, a door way closed in and a new kitchen fitted.

  • Apparently 6months ago I posted about our kitchen renovation, and I have since become well acquainted with the expression the "Pembrokeshire promise" 😂
I.e. saying you'll be there x many days and it actually turns out to be 3x²
    Very slow progress!

Getting married on Tuesday, and planning for that, not to mention the multiple stag dos and other weddings this year has really knocked how much time we could spend on the DIY and chasing tradesmen etc

This week the UFH pipes should go down though. Then the limecrete slab goes in

  • wow!

got a kitchen thing goin on here too... this view is an old doorway that's been bricked up for 30+ years, now being turned into a larder/pantry sort of deal giving it a bit of hidden added depth relative to the wall cabinets.

  • I can recommend a great kitchen fitter but he wouldnt do the wall part or anything.

  • I'm replacing a 1700 long bath with a walk in shower. The footprint is the width of the room so entry is side on not end on. I use an overhead shower but Mr Betty prefers a rail mounted handset. What's the minimum shower screen we'll need to be reasonably splash-free (A), what's the minimum comfortable entry gap (B), and what's the solution if A+B > 1700?

  • Make the gap as small as possible. We had water pissing on the floor in ours, same width. Don’t know the gap now but make it wee.

  • I’d think 500mm would be minimum. You might naturally sidestep a bit to get through. 600 would be more natural.

  • To save space on sink…

  • This will be so great. How’s Goodwick life? Need to get back there one day soon.

  • Ha ha, seen those, prob not.

  • We've got a kitchen at the rear of our house with a suspended concrete block and beam floor which is basically a heat sink. Makes the whole room freezing, especially with the tiles on the floor in there. Part time problem solve is to chuck a big sort of run down in there.

We'll be looking at redoing the room this year (hopefully not for 40k).

Whats the consensus about how to tackle this? Are we doomed to have to chuck a load of insulation onto the floor when we get round to it, and have a step up into the room? Or is there a slimmer way to insulate from the floor up?

  • Are we doomed to have to chuck a load of insulation onto the floor when we get round to it, and have a step up into the room?

Yes. Not all insulation is thick but in some instances a proper step is better than a small trip hazard.

    Is it currently screeded?

  • And you could replace the blocks with either a "thermal" block or even EPS but the beams themselves would still lose heat.
