It wasn’t closing of its own accord! Welsford closed the gap, or lane, by deviating to obstruct another rider and protect his win.
These situations are often commentated on with phrases that avoid pinpointing actions, which doesn’t help. Gaps closing, boxing in, touch of wheels, etc. Much better to trace the movements of riders and refer to the rules for infractions.
I agree, right result, but I can’t see it as 50/50. De Lie was doing nothing wrong. He had a right to sprint through that gap, or in that lane.
But the finish was on a curve, so Welsford was sprinting to take the shortest route. The commentators were saying before the finish that the way it was laid out meant anyone coming up on the left hand side of the road ran the risk of getting the door shut on them.
Yeah, not an ideal finish but a good day for the rules being upheld. The commentators also said the UCI had repeatedly asked organisers not to place finishes near bends, so hopefully there will be some repercussions for them as well, seeing as riders are now wounded.
