  • Yeah, commissaires relegated him. To be honest, I think it was 50/50, in that De Lie was trying to go through a gap that was closing and was being physical about it, but Welsford gave back at least as good as he was getting, so probably the right result.

    It wasn’t closing of its own accord! Welsford closed the gap, or lane, by deviating to obstruct another rider and protect his win.

    These situations are often commentated on with phrases that avoid pinpointing actions, which doesn’t help. Gaps closing, boxing in, touch of wheels, etc. Much better to trace the movements of riders and refer to the rules for infractions.

    I agree, right result, but I can’t see it as 50/50. De Lie was doing nothing wrong. He had a right to sprint through that gap, or in that lane.

  • But the finish was on a curve, so Welsford was sprinting to take the shortest route. The commentators were saying before the finish that the way it was laid out meant anyone coming up on the left hand side of the road ran the risk of getting the door shut on them.
