Russian invasion of Ukraine

  • Doesn’t look like it exploded though?

  • It's not massive but the windshield is blown out and there is smoke.

  • Being inside a car with the blast would deafen you, and the shrapnel would slice you up real good.
I was inside a vehicle when there was an accidental 5.56 discharge…

  • There's a story in our family about my grandfather who was defending a Lithuanian parliament from Russians in 1991.
It was a night time and he was on the roof, protecting it from paratroopers. He lit up a cigarette and a few seconds later it was shot out of his mouth by a sniper. He wasn't harmed though.

I'm sceptical about it but the same with this video with a mine going through the sunroof - what are the chances? If it wasn't recorded, nobody would believe it. Tough luck Ivan fr.

  • Interesting if brief overview on the BBC website of why the rest of the world doesn't necessarily share the West's view of the invasion.

  • No way was it hit by a bullet, that close to the face the shockwave would do some serious damage especially at sniper caliber. More likely a close shot and the shockwave knocked the fag out

  • Still a badass story

  • Pershaps not the most easily verifiable story, but some genius has organised the Russian army along ethnic lines and according to this article cracks are starting to show:

One of the reasons for this ethnic conflict is the reluctance of the Buryat soldiers to conduct offensive operations and their perception of the "inequality" of their circumstances compared to those of the Chechen soldiers. The latter are never on the frontline – they always remain in the rear as "barricading detachments." Their task is to ensure the units of [Russian] occupying forces maintain active military action. That is, to open fire on those [Russian troops] who are trying to retreat."

  • Is that filmed from a drone?

  • the shockwave would do some serious damage especially at sniper caliber.

Out of curiosity, how do you know this?

Also, weren't sniper rifles smallish calibre back then? 7.62mm-ish

Edit: Can confirm that the idea that a large calibre round near miss can hurt you is an urban legend. Or at least the various YouTube videos debunking it confirms it.

  • Ah, guess I was just repeating the urban legend, learn something every day and that

50bmg shot at House of cards and fuck all happens

  • I don't blame you tbh. Have you ever been on target duty at a rifle range before? You're well out of harm's way behind a berm and with other protections but the rounds are passing only a few feet away from you. Can see how it's easy to assume a near miss would be a big deal. The sound is hard to describe but it sounds dangerous!

  • So maybe grandad did have a fag shot out of his mouth, savage if so. I don't know how true it is but I've seen those 2 bullets that supposedly collided together and fused so anything is possible

  • I have actually and yes even through ear protection the sound is incredible!

  • Very good video of the sound https://youtu.be/VTuuOiWgVZ0

I think I imagined it would be like that but smaller

  • Yep! They've been using a lot of drones. From very basic ones like dji mavic for surveillance to more sophisticated ones to drop those explosives.

This tweet claims they're using dji mavic to drop those but people argue that it's something better than that

  • They have their own division with DIY drones. Dropping those explosives needs something chunkier than the small DJI.
There is currently a bit of a conflict between DJI and Ukraine. DJI claims to take no sides and has or tried to disable all use in the conflict zone. On the other hand the Russians are using DJI Aeroscopes to pinpoint the drone pilots and then shell them.
A German company is helping the Ukrianians to hack the DJI protocols and fake the positions.

  • It was just announced that Ukraine and Lithuania agreed to export wheat through our port which would be amazing as a much of cargo industry here relied heavily on exports from Russia / Belarus. I hope it works out and is financially viable.

They also just announced they will be firing 2000 employees from Lithuanian railways as the income dropped 30% because of sanctions for Belarus (which we pushed so hard, lol).

  • Yeh I would expect Russia to hit major rail infrastructure even more in the future to make sending it to other ports less viable

Seen the pictures a few days ago of lines of trucks heading to Russia full of grain they were stealing

  • This might also disturb the heavy weapons delivery once it ramps up. A lot of it depends on rail transport.

  • Either or possibly both, but the Ukrainians have incredible intel or the Russian's have a major leak problem, fairly devastating attack on senior Russian staff
