I had to stop looking at the watch thread for a similar reason, couldn't believe how many people my age owned one or multiple Rolex(es?)... I am now very happy indeed with a second hand Nomos for 1/10. Deleting Instagram has also helped massively with inner peace

I agree with this. I think houses are slightly different because while they are status, they're also the place where the people you love live. And when you can only afford a dangerous, shabby, or unpleasant place to live, that makes you feel like you're letting your loved ones down.
Not being able to afford a fancy watch might be annoying but it doesn't have that same emotive quality.

It's happening where I live too (West Wales). Majority of houses are being bought for holiday lets for inflated prices. It's grim. I saw a stat the other day that said 1 in 10 properties are now second homes.

The terraced house opposite is around 500k with two floor and garden but the floor plan is only 50 feet bigger than our ground floor flat.

- Get given a deposit by relatives, 5-6 figures
- Earn enough to save 5 figures each year
- Bought 10+ years ago
- Combo of all of the above.
National average income is 27k, London average is 47k, so you'd both need to be on 50K and have a 50-100K deposit to get a small terrace house in zone 3+.

A pal of mine just bought a decent sized on for 525 in Leyton, he's gone from sleeping rough to saving 50k a year to get a deposit which is pretty impressive IMO.

The second home thing just makes me furious and I'm not even directly affected by it (very few people want holiday homes in Dagenham). It's just so grotesque. I think second homes should be taxed up the wazzoo and I have no idea why they aren't.

Back on topic, one can point at the ultra-dense residential popping up in zone 2/3, and yes, density is welcome in places in theory, with so much pressure on land. but they are hopeless condiminium designs, silo-designed dormitories, completely devoid of modern thinking.
Back to the Modern House and the Farrow&ballisation of Leytonstone
