Once spent 2 months salary on a Tiffany ring. When the relationship ended (before the wedding) I managed to get £800 for the value of the diamond and platinum. And that was mates rates. The markup for brands is insane. On that level at least, a well chosen watch makes much more sense!
I remember an old episode of The Apprentice where the task was to get stuff off a shoppig list for as cheap as possible. One item was a diamond so they went to Hatton Garden and bought just a single diamond for about £150. Until that point I thought each one would be thousands minimum.
