I did consider this… briefly. However, I think the right way to interpret her comment is as a rhetorical illustration of why she’s not too keen on the practice of engagement rings given their historical connotations of “ownership”, rather than a request.
I’ve probably derailed the thread with this enough already but thanks all for the thoughts and suggestions.

Each to their own. I never bought my wife an engagement ring... But I did get her a nice gold Rolex that gets worn every day. Her point of view was that she's not into diamonds and she's likely to lose anything like a ring. I've witnessed it many a time... randomly taking rings off to use hand lotions etc then forgetting about the ring on the counter top etc. So yeah, do what suits you guys.
Just putting this suggestion out there- you could wear a ring too, as that’s the condition she set for her wearing one.
