  • Midlife Cyclist says milk too. Can't remember if whole or what.

  • Choccy milk for the win.

  • Wronguns

  • milk is for bbs guys

  • It's not just about muscle repair/protein etc., milk is better than water for hydration too

  • I can't drink plain milk (just don't like the taste on its own) so used to use choc milk as a recovery drink.

But the excessive sugary calories were beginning to concern me, and I was coming up with more and more excuses for drinking it (was up to ~4L a week and not enough exercise to warrant it) so I knocked it on the head completely and just switched to having corn flakes with semi-skimmed milk for recovery. Similar protein intake but fewer sugary calories.

I used to get sniffles all the time after exercise and swore the protein hit within 45 minutes (ideally 20 minutes) was helping, but since Corona I guess I'm mingling less and picking up fewer bugs so I've been less affected.

  • milk is better than water for hydration too

There was a TV experiment where two groups of people did similar exercises and then rehydrated with similar quantities of either water or milk, and they compared the water loss (through urine measurement).

The group that drank milk lost less fluid afterwards, which would indicate that drinking milk means more fluid is retained, however it isn't that simple.

    1) Milk contains calories, and so some fluid will be required to store the glycogen that is created from ingesting calories. So drinking milk might actually mean you're less hydrated than drinking plain water, despite weeing out less fluid subsequently.
    2) It doesn't scale. If you need to drink 2l of water to fix your dehydration you're not going to stomach drinking 2l of milk.
    3) Water is cheap and abundant.

A pint of milk (or similar) after exercise is good, but subsequent rehydration should be water or electrolyte drink.

  • milk is better than water for hydration too

I've was hearing this for a while from my non-vegan cycling friends so decided to do a little digging. It turns out that the person who published this study (who happens to work in the dairy industry) was somewhat disingenuous when it came to the results.
While it is true that Milk will hydrate the body faster than water alone, what the study actually concluded was that consuming ANY combination of carb/fat/protein at the same time as water would hydrate the human body more efficiently than the consumption of water alone.
So basically, an energy (protein / nut / whatever food) bar at the same time as water; as in, what we've been doing for years, is just as effective. No technical advantage to slurping down the moo-juice; unless you just like that kind of thing...

  • I was recently looking at wheelbarrow wheels (exciting life, I know) and all I saw were marked 'Not for highway use' does anyone know what qualifies a wheelbarrow/wheel for highway use?

  • So the argument for milk is that it’s so beneficial that it offsets (what I would consider) cruel manufacturing methods + the added environmental cost of its production over tap water?

The other reasonable stance is it’s ok to just like milk and drink it, without science rationalising it for you.

  • Tire pressure ratings?
    Type of bead/rim interface?

  • Bar end shifters for SA 3-speed hub

I managed to snap another bar end shifter for my 3-speed SA hub based shopping bike, and now it emerges the official SA 3 speed indexed shifters are completely unavailable anywhere.

In another thread, someone recommended I might be able to use a relatively generic bar end friction shifter for the time being. I can deal with not having snappy click points for the time being if I can actually ride my darn bike not stuck in top gear.

Anything I need to know? Will any bar end friction shifter do as long as I'm careful with it?

  • Clamp on out of the question?
I worry that friction would result in a fiery death.

  • Is this a camera, and if so anyone know what type?

Was almost hit by a driver jumping the red light at lunchtime (even passing a van which had already stopped) and will report if there's a chance it was recorded. Location would at least suggest police/council and something to do with traffic.

  • Thanks all. I'll be a lot more diligent with water before and see what happens for a bit. As a fan of chocolate milk I might give that a go too but I really don't need more calories so the bowl of cereal option sounds good.

  • As a fan of chocolate milk I might give that a go too but I really don't need more calories

Off-the-shelf chocolate milk is packed with sugar, which is a very bad thing. You can roll your own with cocoa powder which adds very little energy while perking up your milk.

  • Or I could just drink milk which I quite like. Not as much as chocolate milk but still a lot.

  • milk is fucking gross

  • Take me to the fridge!

  • Can anyone recommend a good bike shop/mechanic in the Catford area for servicing and wheel builds?

  • Is there a thread for this kind of thing?

  • Bit further away, but I’ve used Bromley Bike a lot for servicing and wheel builds and I’d recommend them.

  • The Cyclery on Lewisham high st seemed nice when I popped in but I haven't used them for anything significant. They did something v minor for me for free, can't remember what.

  • For wheelbuilding you have @arup in Sydenham.
Chris Compton in Catford is good for regular servicing.

  • There's also Parts and Labour towards New Cross
