• Now, that rationale does make sense and I am absolutely fine with it. I hope I didn't come across as a total killjoy, it's just that I see so many happy yet spherical dogs being slowly killed by kitchen kindness. I can't ask my dogs, but they seem perfectly happy without treats and have always stayed fit (in several cases to over 16). I have never missed a dog walk, even if I am ill or whammed, I simply believe this is more important than bribes. As to training, I have found that patience, repetition and praise trump everything.

  • I only use treats at agility now really.

    The agility training has a pretty strict usage policy of do work > get paid a wage, rather than bribery as such. Eventually we will transition onto playing with a tug toy as the wage rather than treats too.
