Good choice. I prefer the handling of the mid-engined Porsches to the rear-engined ones. As long as you're not bothered by the Clarksonesque rationale of it being a 'poor man's Porsche', which frankly is an argument only fit for Golf Club willy-waving, I think it's a better choice unless you really really need two very small rear seats.
I think I am going to start looking for an early manual 986.1 Boxster S instead of a 996 given that it appears relatively easy to get a decent one for 10k or less rather than the 20k plus for a 996, which seems hard to justify given I will probably only do 1 or 2k a year in it...
