Great to know the ads are not really an issue per se - as long as they don't show up while I'm reading, I'm good. Should I go down the second hand route I might look into jailbreaking should it ever bother me.
The colour temp adjustment seems interesting but looks like a very new feature and people have read kindles in the dark for years so I'm inclined to think it should be fine, as @PhilDAS suggests.
I'm a luddite in the sense that I love an actual paper book but the idea of being able to easily read one handed in the dark (partner hates the side lamp on and always sleeps earlier than I do) and the general practicality of it might well mean I'll get back to reading a lot more than I currently do, which can only be a good thing.
I'd be using the Amazon platform mostly (reluctantly, but it's hard to escape big Jeff's oligarchy) so in short the basic Kindle with ads currently on offer for 40 quid looks like a very good deal. Might have a quick scour for second hand prices and go from there.
Does that still work? Last time I tried I had to install a really old version of the kindle software for it to work, been using a Kobo since don't know if Calibre improved it
Thank you all for the quick response!

Thanks all very much for your inputs!
