Interesting to hear the new DR woes.
Glad to be holding off on looking at these as possible future purchases and perhaps looking at the aftermarket solutions for the legacy frames instead. -

Don't get me wrong, the design is amazing and rather elegant in my eyes.
Plus when the shifting works it is nice to have that range of gears compared to my 2 speed without compromising the weight. My partner has an aftermarket 5 speed and this does not shift as nicely as the Brompton.
I think we are just annoyed and concerned with this new product is that we expect a higher standard from them.

This is stockholm syndrome.

Ha, maybe I've been an architecting too long ;)

You're probably right.
We are mostly a dedicated bunch to Brompton on here so lap up any of the updates they drip feed through. -

I understood this as soon as I test rode the electric brompton. It looked and felt like someone has designed and built it in their shed and they had/have the gall to ask £3.5k for it.
Brompton design is mostly shit. It kind of works. Its niche and unique and thats why people like it. Their ethos is too rigid and the CEO has Steve Jobs syndrome.

All of the above!
Luckily there's a dedicated band of hackers to make these work better. -

Thanks for the info HoKe :)
I agree that the Brompton brand has similar negative parallels to Apple... despite the rinsing price & dubious build 'quality' I like the B more than I thought I would & have used it a LOT more than I thought I would.
The LBC facebook group does some excellent rides that I wouldn't have got up off of my arse to do otherwise ;) -

Finally took Brompton into lbs to fit Ti rear triangle, new crankset, brake blocks, firmer suspension block and Dynamo lights, and a new rear mudguard so I can actually ride the thing again.
No rush on when I should receive it back, but will be nice to ponce about town on it just as the weathers turning decent. -

In the market for a Brompton bag for commuting. What’s everyone’s preference here? Borough or Metro? Sizing tbc at the moment, but trying to not carry anything on the back due to injury for a while, so needs to hold the daily essentials.

It seems Brompton have very wide ranges for the seat rails? And are happy sending new bikes out like this? Seriously burns my retinas….
Could have at least trimmed the inner cables..

This bit caught my eye:
“Butler-Adams has had a gift for business since boyhood. ‘I was permanently flogging stuff. I got Mum to sew beer towels together – to make bedspreads [to sell]. I was obsessed, because I had no money. I had a very privileged upbringing, but my parents gave me no money.’
When he arrived at Newcastle University, he saw another opportunity. Instead of paying rent, he convinced his father to lend him £20,000 as a deposit to buy a house – the first of five he acquired and still owns today. Those houses, too, play a pivotal part in the story. For when the time came to buy Ritchie out in 2008, it was they that Butler-Adams, who earns £210,000 a year, leveraged to raise the £400,000 he needed. ‘Those houses have been amazing. Saved my bacon.”
