Pull forward. They are off in the pic. 90 degree movement.

So the valves do open in different directions of rotation. Because they are attached to either side of the tap they have to. Right hand side opens by turning anticlockwise, left opens turning clockwise.

Yes. It appears you are right. Left hand is clockwise and right hand is anti.
