The yepp mini really is difficult to love on longer rides. Makes my knees hurt thinking about it.
I am gonna make a top tube mounted saddle and some foot rests for my daughter when her brother is old enough to sit in the cargo bike seat. Then she can cycle along side us until she gets tired and jump on when needed.

I'm about a year ahead of you on the two-child front. I've been using a box on my cargo, which kids seem to be able to use from about 2 years old. I'm thinking with J69x10^-2 I might put her in the Hamax on the back of the cargo to start with while she's a bit too small to go loose in the box, then we can still all ride together.
