  • Hello! Long-time tandem botherer over here.

I borrowed a dreadful old Apollo(auling) tandem with my partner for a few days in 2017 and fell in love pretty quickly.

We then upgraded to a nice old Orbit Twin just outside of Bristol for £375. We did loads of touring on it in this guise and had lots fun.

(You can read pt. 1 of this story in full here: https://www.bikeradar.com/features/riding-a-tandem-is-dumb-and-you-should-try-it/

Then, just before OG lockdown, I did a full refurbish and got the bike much as you see it here.

Key swaps included a more upright cockpit, a totally refreshed drivetrain and faster tyres (GravelKing SS+). I also added a set of bar-ends for Laura to give her another hand position. Full specs:

Front derailleur: Shimano Deore XT M780

    Pedals: Crankbrothers Stamp 3
    Brakes: Shimano Deore XT BR-T780
    Drag brake: Arai drag brake
    Brake levers: Shimano Deore T610

We have since got out on one big 12-day tour around south/mid-Wales (image below) and enjoyed lots of stupid hike-a-bike rides with it in the Mendips: https://www.instagram.com/p/CWa0_JZsLdV/

We've got a big jolly around the outer Hebrides planned for September and, other than trying to get an even larger cassette on there, the bike will remain largely the same. We're both from Scotland but this will actually be Laura's first tour there.
