Martins Heron is the station I'd aim for in order to cycle at Swinley - there are cycle paths that take you (pretty much) from the station to the trails without having to use the roads.
Problem is that the trains go from Waterloo, could you connect to any of these from where you are?
Clapham, Richmond, Twickenham.

Anything from an hour to a day I guess. It's more that I want some dirt but don't want to spend hours getting to it and I'd prefer not to drive. I'll star those places you mention and see if I can get out there for a look.
Do you have any routes/gpx of what you're talking about or is it just a case of going exploring?

Could ride to Richmond, then it's Richmond - Ascot - Martins Heron. That might work if I planned a longer day out. I need a house in the country...

Unfashionable opinion, but I like Swinley, you can do a circuit in around an hour which has a nice mix of stuff, then have a coffee and a luxury piss. It's not hard, but that's the point - it's a nice place to have a pedal in the trees.
You can make some of the trails quite challenging - just go in fast and keep off the brakes.
But a total beginner can roll through the same section.

I don't want it hard. I'm a shit MTBer. I just want some dirt I can ride around on the SS while considering gearing choice and saddle height and shit for a 24hr.
Tell me more about this "luxury piss"?

I'm racing next weekend but would be happy to show you the trails that I enjoy a little further into April?

What kind of lunatic would deprive themselves the simple pleasure of an outdoor wee

Who said anything about doing that?

"As a man, the world is your toilet"

A real luxury wee is a sit down one, get twigs up your jacksie doing that outside.

Haha

I generally try and ride solo to avoid the crushing embarrassment of falling off when I hit every small rock but if it's not still winter at the end of April we could do something in the forest (ooh nurse).

I might reconsider this move towards more MTB stuff... how many bones you reckon I can break on one jump?

Somewhere between 206-213

Depends how many people you land on.
How long do you want to ride for?
There is some good singletrack in Bowsey Hill and Ashley Hill, but it does take a while to learn the best trails. There is also some really good stuff in Quarry Wood which is the other side of the A404 from Bisham. You can link the two up via Littlewick Green, Maidenhead Thicket and Pinkneys Green.
