Volvo V70 P2 2000 2.4T

  • Finally got my driving license after studying in driving school for 6 years coz I was lazy to do final exams. Wanted something with manual gearbox, cheap, petrol, wagon, relatively cheap to repair and maintain. We had 5 Volvos already in our family, I was very familiar with maintenance cost and their reliability. Also my brother had around 10 bmw. But it’s almost impossible to find a good one in sub 1500€.

Found V70 on Facebook marketplace. Decided to have a look. It had some rust spots, but nothing too serious. Headlights were new, new seats, 3 inch exhaust etc. Odo at around 470 000km. Price was 1500. Offered 1300. Dude said he will think about it. After a few days he agreed to sell it for 1300€ and I decided to take another look. He started it and it had rough idle. Computer said faulty vvt solenoid. Dude offered 1250€ and I bought it. And here I am. Driving back home in officially my own car.

  • Drove to my friends car shop. He did regular maintenance: belt, water pump, oil, filters etc. Overall car was in 3/5 condition. It has some rust, but structurally it’s looks good.
And then the fun part starts. Car stalled few times on neutral. Also had some problems with power steering. To the car shop again. Found air leak in intercooler pipe. Changed that. Found on scrape yard. Also vvt solenoid. Then cleaned accelerator. No more rough idle, which is great.

  • Quick test before future road trips

  • Now about performance. Engine is B5244T3. Small turbo, which is fun in the city. For me car is fast enough. Tested 0-100. Around 8sec with winter tires. Pretty good for a family wagon. Also it handles well on twisty roads. Just learned to rev match. Next is heel-toe.
Fuel consumption: tbh I don’t care. It shows 7-8l per 100km on a highway.
Next: summer tires, replace some broken interior bits. And drive it as much as possible. Don’t want to upgrade it. Slowly searching S80 for chill cruise. Or s60, 850, c70 with 2.3 t5 for faster rides

  • That consumption is pretty good for a 2.4t I think. Did a lot of research on these a few years ago and with mixed driving it seemed to struggle to get below 10l/100km

Almost bought a 2.5t but backed away when the seller tried to explain to me why his car was one of the few cars that shipped with the premium sound system but without the sub.

  • Fuel consumption got better after cleaning acceleration, changing faulty vvt and cleaning pipes. Volvos have this problem, especially diesels. They have electronic gas pedal. And it gets super dirty. That’s why they have rough idle.
My dad has original sub and better sound system on his xc70. Also 2.5 blocks are known for cracked blocks, due to thin walls. The best is 2.3 block, but it’s almost impossible to find good, original shape.

  • Now that's what I'm talking about. Proper gymwagon!

  • This is cool! Looking forward to progress reports!

  • Nothing interesting happened, but have something to share.
Did car condition inspection(Ülevaatus in Estonian). Surprisingly exhaust sound was good. No problems(3”). Have no catalytic converter, but that was all good. But had pretty bad oil leak. Knew about that, but tried to cover it. So had to fix this problem and try again. Fixed. Turbo oil return pipe gasket. Passed. Next inspection is 07.23. Dunno what plans do I have with it. Not gonna lie, fuel consumption is major issue right now. Luckily I don’t have to commute to work, coz I live 500m from work, but I bought it for big trips and now it just basically sits in my driveway. Whatever. Selling it is pointless, coz it’s in good working condition and I don’t want to replace it for a diesel version.
Also rust isn’t great. Had note about that in inspection. So maybe will just slam it and put some nice wheels and ride it till it won’t pass inspection
