Yeah, the death rate in HK is awful, all of the unvaxxed elderly :(
At least on the mainland we have zero deaths.... Zero covid, zero deaths and zero food in a lot of places. -

How would you guys feel about visiting your immune compromised parents 12 days after testing positive for Covid but after three daily negative LFTs in a row? Safe as houses?
-
• #26680
Yep that's fine.
-
• #26681
Been two weeks, if you’re really worried, get a PCR.
-
• #26682
I would feel fine with that. I think how they feel is more important here though
-
• #26683
You've met parents before, no? Often abjectly cavalier in their regard for their own safety.
-
• #26684
I was expecting LFT availability to people like me to change at midnight but the wording on the order website has changed and I'm no longer eligible.
-
• #26685
Fine, but I'd probably keep my distance, clean my hands and wear a mask, but that's more that you've said they're immune compromised than anything else.

Now the COVID fairy has visited me.
Opened windows, kept my distance etc. from my husband who tested positive last Monday, didn't meet anyone but there you go.
Sucks as son has to stay with ex now until we are both better ..

Did HK have zero cases until this February? Mind blowing graph, regardless. Awful stuff.
In fact, and not wanting to trivialise this, the graph looks all kinds of wrong.
-
• #26689
It's terrible and such an avoidable tragedy. Cases are likely even higher as people aren't reporting positive tests.
-
• #26690
Wow yes big scary steep graph- They have gone from zero deaths per 100K to 3.5 deaths per 100K so hardly end of the world stuff. 0.0035%

The problem is (as mentioned upthread), this is a large number of elderly unvaccinated people dying specifically because HK apparently followed a policy of prioritising vaccination of working age people. If you look at the raw numbers of deaths in cumulative form you can see that basically nothing was happening until mid-Feb, but that roughly 7,500 people have died of Covid since then. Given that the population of HK is 7.5 million that means that they've lost 1 in every 1000 of their population to Covid in the last 5 weeks, and that proportion will be much, much higher in the elderly age groups.

the median age of Covid patients who have died in Hong kong is 85. The median age of death in Hong kong is 85.

More graphs showing age, pre-existing conditions and vaccination status here: https://www.covidvaccine.gov.hk/pdf/death_analysis.pdf
Their problem was care home residents with chronic conditions and no vaccination because either the doctor or the family didn’t think the vaccine side effects were worth the risk when they had zero cases in the community in HK.

Thanks for that, pretty bleak reading for those thinking about how to protect vulnerable people, especially those who can't get vaccinated.

I would point out that the fatality rate in younger people is overstated as I know lots of people who have had Covid but nobody who has reported this to the government.
The official data shows about a million and a bit official cases but HKU estimate this to be over 4.4 million.
-
• #26696
Yes, I was going to say that actual cases are WAY higher - why would you report it?! 4.4m out of 7.5m is totally bonkers.

Day one of Shanghai Puxi lockdown here. At 8am everyone in my building was rounded up and we lined up in groups of ten outside, before being allowed to walk to the testing site (around the corner). Quick swab and then walk back, then back inside. We'll do it again the day after tomorrow - not allowed out of the apartment until then.
The east side of the city was due to be released at 5am this morning but 23 out of 24 communities had "too many" (ie. not zero) cases so they're in a different kind of lockdown (ie. it's exactly the same but has a different name). Some people have already been in lockdown for 14 days and have run out of food so the government is delivering food parcels... so that's good I guess.
The west (best) side of the city is due to be released on tuesday but it's almost certainly not going to happen, and even if you are lucky enough to be allowed out, nothing will be open, no shops, nothing.
I might sign up to be a volunteer, just to get out of the house. Also I get a hazmat suit. And I might get first dibs on the food deliveries when we all run out here too.

One of my minions is in the east side, they’re three weeks in and have a case in their block so it’s a while yet before they can go out.

That's grim - bad enough that they live on the east side, but this adds insult to injury.
Still testing negative I guess mask wearing indoors & keeping windows open helps. (brrrrr)
My husband is not too bad with it, very inflamed throat but its like a bad cold.
One if his sisters, vaccinated, is now in week 3. Inflamed uterus (eek!!!), hives, complete brain fog, sense of smell/taste going weird...
