Fine.

Disc brakes are dead

unless your main bike is going to be a cargo bike you're probably fine with the rim brake, but you might catch some flack from gcn watchers

do it.

Do it while you can! In a few years I doubt you’ll be able to buy a new rim brake frame. Parts though, provided you don’t mind second hand, should be available for a long while yet.

future availability of parts/wheels etc.
How far into the future are we talking?
You can still buy 9-speed parts brand new, so I don’t think rim brake parts will die out soon.

4, 5, 6 years at most really. Don't think there's much point planning beyond that!

Disc brakes are a downgrade.

Do it. Plenty of parts still around and also plenty of frame builders who build rim specific as it has a better feel

Direct mount rim brakes are excellent.
Build what you want, not what the marketers want to sell you. -

I've upgraded my gravel bike to canti brakes and it is so much more fun. Sure, rims wear in the mud, but these days alloy rims cost almost less than disc rotors...

The only concern I've ever heard about in regards to rim brakes in the context of modern riding is heat dissipation. The only folks I know who ride rim brakes regularly are randonneurs and they have some harrowing stories regarding 24km+ descents heating their rims up so much that it bursts their tubes, etc.

Isn't heat dissipation one of the few remaining issues of modern disc brakes?
Obviously you won't pop a tube, but brakes can fade and fluids can boil on prolonged descents.

There are some bargains to be had on rim brake frames and wheels second hand.

I always wanted one of these but at the time, I had not the funds sadly.

What's the consensus on a new rim build (as a main bike) in 2022? Fine or foolish? While I've not had any stopping issues on carbon rims (and I'd ride my gravel bike in the winter), there's obviously possible issues around future availability of parts/wheels etc. I'm on the fence, and would welcome some other views.
