The only concern I've ever heard about in regards to rim brakes in the context of modern riding is heat dissipation. The only folks I know who ride rim brakes regularly are randonneurs and they have some harrowing stories regarding 24km+ descents heating their rims up so much that it bursts their tubes, etc.
