I tried the trick of putting a piece of filter paper at the bottom of the basket for an espresso this morning (inspired by the video below). Definitely produced a very tasty, clear shot, but contrary to what's said here it took ages to pull. That makes sense to me as I can't see how it would reduce back pressure. I'm going to experiment a bit more with it and see if I can dose less or grind a bit coarser but still benefit from the improved clarity.
