Might be a little hole to put a very small flat head screwdriver in to pry it apart?

As DethBeard has commented, it usually takes a flat blade screwdriver (4mm will do it). It's possible it slides off though. In my experience most of them slide off once you put the screwdriver in the slot.
Like I said before, usually you pull it off the ceiling in anger and have a good look at it before you figure out how it works. By which time you look like a really angry mammal to any member of the household who's watched you do this.
The state of some of them when I've been called in to fix it.

Cheers, I've had a quick nosy at the smoke alarm I can get to and obviously I've no idea how to get the fucking thing off (but did nearly pull it off the ceiling). Neither twisting or levering seemed to work. Conveniently no manufacturer on there so I can google it.
