It's fucking bizarre though. Why would he agree to assault someone live on TV? Surely he's not that desperate for publicity? There wasn't a punch line (....) and no reveal of it being fake etc.

Yeah, I don't have a good answer for that. Perhaps in more macho environments "protecting your family" with physical violence plays better?

I meant more about the Oscars in general. The news this morning reported it along the lines of "Usually the Oscars get about 9m viewers, this clip alone has been watched 150m times."
