Which garmin and which bars? I’ve got an edge 20 and flat bars and just use the standard 1/4 turn mount which works exactly as it should. Had also worked on the m type handlebars just fine.
1/4 turn and S bars would Probably be ok for an edge 500 sized device as well. Have had my 800 on there when needing maps, but a bit awkward to be the angle right, and does interfere with the fold.

I'm trying to use a 1030 on H/M bars, currently have the quarter turn mounted to the inside of the grips which isn't bad, doesn't interfere with fold but is awkward and not particularly stable

The were some people with ‘cross bars’ mounted on the m bars on the Brommy Hacks fb page. Think they had used plastic tube and cities to attach it.
