  • There's actually another layer to this that is even worse.

Many of the GPs who work for this service only do so because they were close to burnout in the NHS. It represents a skills drain as well as an elitist healthcare system. This company is likely to list on the New York Stock Exchange with a valuation of $4.5bn next year, despite being headquartered in London.

  • No, I basically read the forum passively and certainly don't file any of the info as memorable unless about bikes/routes etc! Your comment came across as healthcare willy-waving which is particularly tasteless - especially to those of us having to wait for the machinations of the NHS. Apologies for missing the context.

  • Apologies for missing the context.

No apology required, I can see how my post came across like that.

I'm very conflicted about this. Whats my choice? Continue to not receive GP healthcare from the NHS or exercise my privilege to go private but maybe in doing so contribute to making the problem worse?

This service has over 5,000 daily users, is technically the largest GP practice in the UK and is making lots of money. There is no way that the Tories will not try to push further towards this model. At this point I really feel that the days of the free NHS have already ended.

  • FWIW, I don't think you need to feel remotely conflicted. You're simply using a service that's available and which you can afford. You're not depriving anyone of anything, in fact you're probably freeing up an appointment!

    Tories will Tory, regardless.

  • Ah I see, maybe you didn't see the chat a few pages back

Your post or in particular the 'tongue-in-cheek' closing comment is still tasteless or unpleasant or whatever, with or without your contextual posting. I think that criticism is fair - that individual post is not justified by the fact you abhor a two-tier health service.

Fair enough, it was an uncalled for and tasteless comment. I was not intending to willy wave or brag about anything though.

  • I suppose the whole purpose of me posting that was in response to the people on here, a few pages back, who were saying they were struggling to receive services from their NHS GPs. I wasn't sure that people are aware that there are alternatives, if you are fortunate enough to be able to afford £50 to £100 for that sort of thing.

I was also wrong to assume that everybody on here would have seen my posts about my mother waiting 2 years for an NHS appointment for a terminal illness and my mother in law dying while on a waiting list for initial diagnostics for a problem, or my brother in law not being able to access emergency health services during a life threatening situation recently, so the whole post was tone death.

  • ^^ Yeah I know - just pointing out that intent doesn't justify output. Anyway, hope you get well soon.

  • the whole post was tone death.

    Ouch

  • Ouch

I'll leave that typo there tbh. Neatly references the reality of the healthcare system right now.

  • Came here to post something else, but, I reckon me & Stonehedge may well have the same NHS GP.

It is pretty much impossible to get an appointment with them. If you have a cold or that sort of thing forget it, by the time you see a GP, it will be over.

However, once you get past the gatekeepers, my local GP surgery works really well. I suffer from high blood pressure, and I am very happy - having got into the system - with the quality of the service I receive. In fact, through work I have the opportunity to go private, but have never bothered because I do not believe the standard of care could be improved upon.

In addition, as me and Mrs Jangle are getting on a bit, and have elderly parents, we've been spending more time in NHM facilities than we would like lately.

Contrary to some opinions expressed upthread, I think the NHM offers an amazing service, and is in rude health. If it's in danger, I don't think it's from lack of funding as much as it is from a large weight of people treating it like a doormat.

Don't fall asleep or they might think you're an exhibit.

  • It's digital antennas. Specifically when operating in conjunction with your ye olde Hi-fi system.

That not quite clear break up really rips my knitting out. I feel like I'm playing twister in order to receive a clear signal.

    Je deteste.

  • Just as a counterpoint, the surgery I am registered with is excellent and very easy and quick to get an appointment at. They answer the phone and have always been very efficient.

  • When the Skip delivery guy hands me the pizzas vertically.

  • trotting across the concourse at St Pancraa International and getting earwormed by a baroque piano version of Baker St. 18hrs and counting.

  • Whats my choice?

Ah the old arms/drug dealers conflict.

    /s

  • If you have a cold or that sort of thing forget it, by the time you see a GP, it will be over.

Do people need to see a GP for a cold?

Where I currently live the NHS GP surgery always has same day appointments. When I tore thr ligaments in my ankle, I got a GP appointment, an x-ray and a review of x-rays all on the same day.

  • Trying to re-order a word doc that has loads of images, text boxes and shapes

  • A hellscape that not even Hieronymus Bosch could have imagined

  • Wow, you have such a way with words

  • Leaving a hospital after visiting someone who is there, for the rest of their days, not by carelessness or disrespect for their own long-term health, but only for inheriting a few bad genes, only to have to steer a wonky path and hold my breath through a throng of smokers who have enough energy to haul themselves through wards, corridors and reception but no further than cough and spluttering distance of each entrance.

  • Feel ya. Have you tried setting the runaround on images to something less jumpy and then making sure all pics get set Send to Back, while reordering?

I have frequent long-dark-night-of-the-soul interactions with Word because of the amount of policy, procedural and general support collateral I am having to produce. I’m actually thinking of paying for a Creative Cloud subscription out of my own pocket (and then posting in I Hate about it).

  • Learn LaTeX.

http://www.overleaf.com is a good place to start.

It is hard going to begin with, but so worth it to not have to deal with Word's formatting again.
