  • Yea. I think £50 on an SSD and three hours spent is fine to eek a bit more life out of it. I've already got all the tools to do the job and it will be one less evening spent morosely staring at my phone with some shit tv on in the background when I actually do it, so happy days.

Maybe I should do it when the toddler is around just in case he thinks it's interesting...

  • do it when the toddler is around

That sounds exceptionally stressful. But why not give it a go.

I've been trying to work out the best value gravel/whether it's worth getting it delivered with small children around for 2 days now and only have one comparison.

  • Does it make sense though (does your old Air run the new OS well)?

It's only running Big Sur but that one runs perfectly fine without any crashes or malfunctions. I want to upgrade it to Monterey but my partner won't let me out of lazyness

  • I'm only getting iPhone home screen notifications for one of my email accounts which is a gmail one. My personal website account and a university one I have both don't show. Is there a setting somewhere I need to check for the ones noot appearing?

  • There was talk on here about a decent usb-c hub that wasn't the huge and spendy caldigit one, does anyone remember?

  • Maybe… settings - modifications - mail - customise notifications?

I’ve only got one mail account on iOS mail, so can’t tell if they will show up individually there or not.

  • I had no idea customised notifications existed, thank you

  • Thanks!

My issue is that my wacom doesn't get enough power from my monitors usb-c port via a usb hub. Maybe I need something externally powered to avoid more cables than one from my MBP?

  • I've got a wacom bluetooth medium powered through the satechi, I'm assuming it's drawing power from the laptop charger I've also got running through the hub as well.

    Current set up is:

    into satechi -
usb - c charging cable for my 16in MBP

    Out of satechi -
    HDMI to external monitor
    USB to wacom tablet
USB to lightning charging cable for iphone

    Satechi USB-c into MBP

  • Interesting. Picked up a usb-c to usb converter today, hopefully it’ll power the Wacom when it’s on its own. If not it’ll be hub-time.

  • Seems like it's hubtime :(

Was hoping that my LG 5k could act as a hub but apparently not. My wacom is hooked up from usb-c to apples usb-c-usb converter but it keeps cutting out. External hdd's as well.

Do I really need that Caldigit thing or can I go with something more sensible? Had a look around but there seems to be a random range of ports on most of them. Some has VGA, some has card readers, some has ethernet. I just need a few usb ports and a few usb-c, all with enough power to actually run stuff.

  • Same ponderings here

Have a gaming PC with 2 4k monitors (monitors each have 1x displayport connected to pc, and 2x hdmi spare)

And have M1 MacBook Pro 14 to connect along with power delivery etc

Would like to use the MBP at the desk without faffing with cables each time.

Had used a cheapy one a while back that the monitor seemed to cut out often

  • I seem to have an issue with the ear speaker on an iPhone XS. It’s really quiet. It’s not the volume. Any ideas what it could be and a resolution?

  • Is it gunk on the mesh? Have you tried an earbud doused in rubbing alcohol to clean it off?

  • see @Ramsaye comment above, me and the missus have had the same issue. So much so that even after using a cotton bud doused in rubbing alcohol, I take most of my calls on speakerphone or headphones to circumvent the problem.

  • I will try that. Thanks both. I think the mesh may be clogged.

  • LG 5k could act as a hub

From my epic issues with trying to get a one cable solution for my screen, I found that the LG5K screen only has one thunderbolt to connect to a laptop etc, and the other USB C ports are just normal 5V inputs. If your Wacom draws more power than 5V it might explain the issues you're having.

I've got the LG24" Ultrafine 4K and that's got two thunderbolt ports which both deliver the full power output. I don't know why LG didn't include two ports on the 5K screen?

  • Cause they’re LG? So many poor choices on that screen. Fantastic panel but just about everything else can be improved.

  • What USB C docks do you mac people use? I want something that I can switch between my mac mini at home and my work HP laptop. Kensington has a few models (like SD4750P).
    I've just got a single 28" 4k monitor.

  • Ive got a henge dock think its called stone now or something like that.

Its decent but is a bit big to carry if you want to move.

  • I should have clarified, the dock won't move, but I want to be able to take the USB-C plug out of my mac desktop and slap it into my work laptop so I can use screen + USB when I'm working at home.

    Will check out Henge cheers

  • I went with a generic vertical laptop stand from Amazon and just have the laptop in there and plugged into the monitor with one of Apple's horrendously expensive but seemingly the only way to guarantee they'll actually work USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapters (with the added bonus I can also use it to connect the iPad Air to a telly too).

Whole lot for £95 and can easily take my little dongle out to anywhere I think I might want to use it. Matron.

  • That'll fit your spec right then.
