What soap should be put in water to clean a bike? Is fairy liquid ok?
-
• #1953
Most contain salt but fairy has been my go to for years . Rinse thoroughly after.

Will a 10speed Shimano deore shifter work with a 10 speed Shimano road cassette?
-
• #1956
this is not a very helpful response, but I had a similar issue with a new shimano 10 speed drivetrain recently. After riding it a bit, the issue went away. someone suggested to me that the mech hanger might be out of line. I never checked it though as it's fine now.

Are you just chasing out and cleaning threads, if so then the cheaper one should do the job, there are other brands like icetoolz but unless it's from aliexpress then all seem to be silly money..
-
• #1958
'fraid not. Dyna sis shifting.
-
• #1959
Unfortunately I've tried that option. Running through all the gears again I've noticed that I'm going from one end of the casette to another with 8 shifts instead of 9.
-
• #1960
What does a local shop charge to chase the threads; it's not exactly a job you will do every day !?
-

Someone will probably correct me on this, but I believe that angular contact bearings are only useful in a situation where significant preload is applied to the bearing.
As with most bike bearing stuff, we don't apply enough force or spin them fast enough for it to make any noticeable difference, so get the cheapest ones with the best seals, and repack them with marine grease -

^This mech with some sram 10 sp brifters
Whats the biggest cassette I could run on a 1x setup. I have heard 11-42 is ok. Would 11-46 work?
-
• #1963
Cassette doesn't make any difference in Shimano/Sram land.
8=8
9=9
10=10
11=11Shifter to rear mech is where you need to check. MTB 10s = dynasys, so nothing from road world will work with it. Road 10s = could be one of several pull ratio.
If you have a dynasys 10s MTB flat bar shifter then you'll need a dynasys 10s MTB rear mech. Loads to choose from.

Cheers. Looking to change cassette sizing, not the mech.
MTB 42 t doesn't have a place on a commuter -
• #1965
All you'll need to worry about is going below a 34t and it being for 11 speed road spaced freehubs only when your freehub for a big ol' MTB cassette is probably 8/9/10.

I like restoring old frames and this is a problem I run into more often that you'd expect! I have a couple of old BSA cups with notches like this to chase the threads:

But it doesn't always work if the threads are really bad so I'd just like to have something more professional at home

Terrible photo, I will take another if needs be.
See those little parallel lines on the rim?
Is that superficial, or is the rim a death trap if these lines go all the way round? Are they scratches or stress fractures?

Something to do with stresses, movement of the rim and the finish kind of cracking? I'm sure I've seen this kind of thing on rims before and they have seemed otherwise solid.
Entire rim being like that would probably worry me less than one spot too you know?
I'd be concerned if it was concentrated around spoke holes or if there was any distortion at the spoke holes but those look alright?
-
• #1970
Have you got the cable anchor bolt in the mech installed correctly and the cable passing around it in the correct orientation?
-
• #1971
There’s no damage round the spoke holes and yeah it goes all the way round both wheels
Better pic

Quick Q on chain length - I've just reduced large chainring size by 2 teeth (mid compact to compact) and at the same time increased cassette max tooth by 2 teeth (28 to 30) - if the net number of teeth is the same is it worth me resizing the chain (I'm assuming it won't net out perfectly, but should be close)?

What is the technical term for this? Want to find a 10mm bit and not have to buy a new multi-tool.
In use.. https://www.topeak.com/global/en/products/75-Mini-Tools/174-MINI-9
Ah you're right, I didn't even notice that! Does it make that much of a difference to justify the price difference? I guess they are both good deals but I've never had a tool like this so not sure what to look out for
