You have more chance of supervising a crane than getting the average labourer to pay attention, you'll probably get more sense out of it as well.
Corvids would have the most sense, and subsequently be most resistant to supervision. Pheasants are too stupid to take direction, so I’d agree, cranes would be a good compromise and would likely accede to your persuasion.
