  • That's what I'm thinking, but do you think it would damage the structural integrity of the frame if left?

  • I’d very much doubt it but I don’t know what it is so shouldn’t comment.

My bike is riddled with it and it doesn’t bother me. Others, wouldn’t ride it.

Is it not just a reaction with the clear coat? Someone on here will know. Try the any questions thread.

  • Aluminium passivates in the presence of oxygen- a process which forms a thin oxide surface layer on top of the shiny/brushed alloy. I believe that what happens to these frames is that the clear coat develops cracks/channels through which the air gets to the alloy, leading to the worming that you pictured.

Passivation isn’t harmful per se- but to get rid of it you would need to do as PhilDas suggests and strip it down and refinish it before clear coating it again. I’d factor in £500+ for a good job to be done.

How much does it bother you?

  • i like that, what are the bars ?

  • Thanks. Bars are basic classic drop ‘Brand X’ Wiggle ones. Think that frame would look odd with flat bottom drops

  • looks quick.
    PBAS sticker noted.

  • I have had several Cannondales with this. The only ones it was a problem with was a Six13 which ended up cracking where the carbon met. But I’ve stripped several CAADS to bare aluminium and then polished it and it was mint. Needs polish regularly but they look awesome and no more worms.

  • How to make a CAAD13 look very good….

  • Hey thanks for info. Surely £500+ to refurb is quite a high estimation, you can get a frame and fork stripped and repainted for around £300.

It doesn't bother me hugely, I guess I was just thinking if it's a relatively easy fix it would look better and mean the condition doesn't worsen.

  • Hey good to know, thanks for the info.

  • I’d just ride the shit out of the wormy frame until it cracks. Not much point chucking money at them, they are so old and if regularly ridden closer to their fatigue life than not. Just stick a sticker over the wormy bit and ride it.

  • Yes! This is so good. Imagine one with 1993 Cannondale Track livery. I also own a stock CAAD13 (matte black) which is lovely to ride but maaaaayn is it ugly.

  • I like it, but maybe I am biased re non period correct resprays..

  • Finally finished my Caad7..happy how it looks and rides..

  • Someone #onhere, maybe? Can't be too many people commuting around Dalston on a CAAD12.

  • That turned out great, glad to hear you‘re enjoying it!

  • @seb1977 super nice mate. Sort thing i'm trying to go for, i'd have low profile rims mind you

  • Can anyone help ID the year of manufacture year for this Saeco model? I believe it's 2004 but i can't see it in the catalog anywhere? Thanks
