Sandblasting titanium frame.

  • Does anybody know anywhere in London I can get this done? I want to sand blast my titanium frames so they have the matt finished and not a brushed finish.

    so going from this

    to this

  • I'm happy to say it's now over twenty years since I finished with the finishing trade, so my knowledge is not up to date.

However I can tell you that the finish you get from blasting depends on the medium used, so to ask for 'sandblasting' seems to exclude the other media, for example: glass bead, grit, shot, chilled iron and so on. It's a long list.

Your first task should be to establish what type of blasting is suitable for titanium - I know, for example, that Reynolds disapproved of anything harsher than glass bead for 753. Don't believe what the man at the blasting firm tells you - if he wants the job he'll tell you that what he's got is just what you want. If in doubt about the finish get a sample done, but the main thing is not to wreck the frame !

Good luck with this - there's not a lot of the metal finishing trade left.

  • Defo want something gentle, one of the glass bead mediums maybe. Most metal shops as clubman says will just suggest what they already have in the tank.

  • Sure I read something about Moots using crushed walnut shells - I kid you not
