I used to ride 58X12 on a Brompton and it was pretty much spot on for 90% of London terrain - as above the smaller wheels mean acceleration is a lot easier but top end speed suffers, so a much higher gear is needed to maintain anything above 25kph without spinning at 200rpm!

I get the exact same top speed out of it mate. Regarding the single speed, I'm adamant it's all you need in London if you're familiar with using a fixed gear or road bike. I run a Mash at 53/15 and the 56/12 on the Brompton is way easier. The simplicity of the SS is great too. Easier and lighter carrying it around Aldi. If you remain keen give us a shout and obviously the price is negotiable.
I'm not a current Brompton owner/rider, but the gearing on this confuses me. 52x12 is a pretty large gear on a normal road bike. Is there a reason it's so big on this?
