Would there be enough room for a flat/shallow head bolt?

there would - but then I'd have to use a nut on the other side which is too big

Still no room even with the bolt head on the inside of the guard and the nut on the outside?

Couple of washers with the rivet was a good shout too dunno if you’ve tried that already.
