And here I am, trying to reach sidewall on digestive biscuits on the GN125, DR350, and XJ600.
I haven’t even managed to get close on the Blackbird yet.

Has anyone found a good deal on a Japanese site? I had a look at the link kindly provided by @Nahguavkire but the prices seemed broadly similar to the UK. I was looking at sports bikes though.

Having issues with my Triumph Explorer.
Turn the key and it does the usual preflight checks, fuel pump makes its usual noise, but pressing the starter does nothing.
I can hear a "click" but nothing happens. There is also a whining noise when nothing is being pressed.
Quite quiet, bit like a little "wheewhooo wheewhoo" almost like an alarm noise, but almost inaudible.Turn the key off it stops after a few seconds.
Managed to get a brief splutter from the starter after 5 minutes of trying (moved it, tried on the side stand, tried sitting in it, tried bumping it before realising I had no chance of getting it up to any speed to jump start)
But it didn't catch an no joy after that.Going back in a bit to chuck a beefy lock on it.

Have a feeling my dad is about to gift me his hornet 900 on Friday when he comes down here to pick up his new triumph.
I do want a bike and I would appreciate it but I don't really want it for in London. I live within the ULEZ zone so it would mostly only see central London traffic and for that I don't really fancy something as big as a 900.
Not sure what to do as I think he'll be keeping it a surpriseEdit: probably sound super unappreciative here lol. I would actually love the bike, he's had it since new in 2006 and it will be quite sentimental to me now and in the future but I don't want it sitting rusting on a London street when it's been garaged all its life until now and I'll never have it out of second gear.

How far does he live from you? Keep it and insure it at his place if there's room and it's not too far - take it out for the occasional blast. They're cool bikes - a minor cult classic.
They're super-civilised as town bikes by the way.

You hear the solenoid clicking but it's not throwing the cog to engage the starter. Three things come to mind. Low battery (possibly caused by alarm malfunction based on the whee noise). Starter motor earth not clean or fixed properly. Sticking starter actuator, least likely option but a tap with a hammer was an old school short term solution.
I'd say low battery due to parasitic drain or the more embarrassing alternative, kill switch engaged, are high on the list of possibilities.

200 miles away sadly. I could see what the mother in law says about keeping it on her drive though

What is it with people giving you bikes?
He's an experienced biker, so if he hasn't already anticipated the difficulties his gift might present, I'm sure he'd understand what you wrote above.
But don't count your chickens: he might be chopping it in and is planning on getting on it, while he's in town...

I've just got one of those faces :D
It's good to hear from you. I worried about you when you took a little hiatus from On-Here a while back. I still owe you one and I intend to repay the debt at some point
-
• #19836
Punchable?
I'm sure you've "paid it forward" many times over, either way there's no debt.
-
• #19837
Wait. Who owes who a punch in the face?

I am a bit of a muggle so have no idea.
the only rebuttals are:
No alarm
Bike lights up as normal, so battery has some charge
Fuel pump primer (i guess) makes its noise.
before I press the starter motor the whine is there.
It is different today, more a constant noise.I can't tell if something is trying to spin/pump/move and can't.
Pushing the starter button does nothing.
This morning I popped it in gear and rocked it a bit, and tried a (probably too slow) bump start with no joy.
Turns out I have RAC cover, so will give them a call this morning and see if they can solve the riddle.
(There are no error codes if I open diagnostics, P0000 comes up)

These days it's not easy to diagnose electrical problems on m/bikes. I've found the same thing with the electric bike. The lights flash a warning and you're stuck with nothing user serviceable.
It's nearly new and massive if I remember right?
Having said that it could be the starter solenoid that's whining.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starter_solenoid
Sometimes you have enough battery power but a dodgy connection stops the required amperage for starter operation. Loose or corroded earth strap etc. Change in tone of noise could be it's a component drying out having been soaked in the rain.
Lots of possibilities.

Thanks for your input, I realise it is impossible to diagnose over the internet, I was more venting.
RAC reckons starter motor, we tried bumping it, but it's pretty flat round here and the bike is ludicrously heavy.
Booked in for the local garage for next week (earliest it can be taken in) and recovery from my house to the shop.
Just need to move it from my work to home. About a mile or so.
May be able to bump it on the way... -
• #19841
It does seem most likely the starter. Disappointing on a bike that age. I had a similar problem on the R80, turned out to be the earth strap.
-
• #19842
Reckon it'll be an expensive fix?
Guessing purely time to dismantle the bloody thing. It is a 2015 with 23k on the clock, I've only had it a few months, annoyingly.
-
• #19843
I remembered you getting it but thought it was younger than that. I would guess that dismantling it will be a pain. Even the R80 was a couple of hours to get to the starter but I was lucky not to have to replace it.
Last time I heard about someone getting one changed it was on an ER6 and they paid around £700 in all.

How was the starter motor diagnosed?
The usual check is to short the starter solenoid to see it the problem is the starter or the solenoid or something else.
What bike is it, I can't remember.
-
• #19845
Nothing is concrete diagnosed, just RAC mechanics opinion.
TBF he might have said solenoid., but there is no action.
we tried bumping and got a cough, but not enough to get goingIt is a 2015 Triumph Explorer 1200
Lunch time I managed to push it ~600m towards home, it fucking slayed me.
MrsDeth meeting me at its latest abandoned spot to help me get it up the ever-so-slight incline and then it should be an "easy" roll home.
May try and bump it again when the road descends. -

Nobody close enough to you to either put in a van, or tow you with a rope?

Sorry not trying to be a know it all. Just trying to help with stuff before firing up the parts cannon.
Bumping EFI bikes is difficult with a flat battery as all the electronic stuff needs power to work, some ems are set up not to be bump started as possible damage to cats due to unburn fuel igniting in them.
Bon Chance.

Got it home with a good stoking effort from MrsDeth.
Safely ensconced in my garage for the time being. -

Give these chaps a ring - https://www.triumphparts.co.uk/
My guess is that you'll need one of these -
as long as you don't have a lithium battery fitted - a cheap voltmeter at a tenner on the terminals will reveal a lot - my guess is that the reading is something beginning with 11 which will mean your charging system is faulty. Hope it's not too pricey.

I've got an issue with the Lithium battery and standard rectifier on a BMW. What is it Lithium needs from the reg/rec?
Should have fitted (insert brand and model of choice) they are so much better ;)
Know people that fitted 180 tyres to standard SV/bandit rear wheels. Then seen people argue over 60/70 fronts make so much difference but in the end if you like it who cares.
